Where Is Slovenia – Discover Its Diversity

Travel to SloveniaWhen I am traveling to Peru for the best Machu Picchu tours or around the world I am often asked where do I come from. When people hear my answer I see on their faces that they don’t have any idea where is Slovenia. Sometimes Slovenia is confused with Slovakia, sometimes people think that Slovenia is some of ex-Soviet Union countries or something else. So if I am traveling to some other continent far away I often answer that I am just from Europe or more precisely from the southern part of Central Europe. Sometimes I add that Slovenia is most developed ex-Yugoslav country and that is already part of European Union with official currency Euro. When I add that neighboring country is Italy I notice some shine in the eyes of the person I am talking to.

Slovenia is slightly larger then 20.000 sq km with about 2 million people, which I found out on a tour of Machu Picchu, is considerably larger than mountaintop city of Machu Picchu at 326 sq km. Its neighboring countries are Italy on west, Austria on north, Hungary on northeast and Croatia southeast. Capital city Ljubljana is placed in the centre of country and… Continue reading

Renting an Apartment in Slovenia

Even until the early 1990s, finding a suitable house or apartment to rent on a long-term basis in Slovenia was not easy. Long-term rental options, particularly outside the main tourist centers, were few and far between. That has changed significantly in recent years. You now have a fairly wide range of furnished or unfurnished apartments and houses to rent especially in around the capital, Ljubljana. The demand for non-vacation rentals has increased since Slovenia joined the EU in 2004. Most of the foreigners who rent accommodation over the long term in Ljubljana are diplomats and businessmen.

Slovenia is just half the size of Switzerland but is culturally and naturally diverse. From modern and cosmopolitan Ljubljana to the gorgeous Triglav National Park and beautiful Portoroz on the Adriatic coast, Slovenia has an environmental diversity, which is surprising for its size. The country shares borders with Croatia, Austria, Italy and Hungary. As regards economic development, it is somewhere between western and eastern Europe. Slovenia – What To See In Three Days

I will give some ideas about what to see in Slovenia if you can only spend three days.

Day 1

For most people not living in neighbouring countries their first contact with Slovenia will probably be Ljubljana Airport (officially named Letalisce Jozeta Pucnika). If you decided to travel on your own (not with agency) and want to see as much as possible in three days then it is best to rent a car at airport.

First I suggest driving to Bohinj. It takes about 1h drive by car if roads are not too crowded. The main attraction in Bohinj is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. It is in Triglav National Park. There are many things that you can do. A must-see attraction is the Savica Waterfall. It takes about 15 minutes of quite easy uphill walking from parking place to get there. After that I suggest you take a Cable Car ride to Vogel. It is a very scenic ride with a great view of Lake Bohinj and the mountains around. When you come to upper Vogel Cable Car station you can hike around the mountains in the vicinity. If you don’t like hiking you can eat or drink… Continue reading
